Trakai Island Castle

Trakai, Lithuania — a red-brick Gothic castle rebuilt stone by stone on an island in Lake Galvė, once the seat of Grand Duke Vytautas and still the country's most photographed sight.

Cross the wooden footbridge to the castle for the keep's exhibits on medieval Lithuania, then rent a kayak to see the walls from the water. The lakeside old town is home to the Karaim community — try their signature kibinai pastries at a family-run café.
